Even critically-reviled films have fans

Even critically-reviled movies garner positive reactions from audiences.  And by "critically-reviled," I mean receiving under 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Some of these reviews, taken from imdb.com, make me laugh.

Abduction
Released: September 23, 2011
RT Score: 4%
Why critics hate it: "Sadly, it's impossible to fake the faintest enthusiasm for this picture, which is a fourth-rate Hollywood thriller that bungles a lot of thievery from better movies."
Positive Review: "The plot is great, kept me guessing the whole time. Was more than action packed and to me Lautner and Collins have fantastic chemistry. Lautner has matured and it really showed to me in this movie."

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star
Released: September 9, 2011
RT Score: 0%
Why critics hate it: "Icky and repellent in ways it probably did not intend."
Positive Review: "We come to expect movies to have way too much drama, and long scenes of terrible progression but Bucky didn't annoy me like that. I found this film to be very refreshing."

The Darkest Hour
Released: December 26, 2011
RT Score: 11%
Why critics hate it: "An alien invasion flick that evidently expects dramatic shots of a depopulated Red Square to make up for a flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character."
Positive Review: "The Darkest Hour is a great movie, with a really good story...I just watched it in the theater earlier today, and now I can't wait to get it on Blu-ray to watch it again."

Dream House
Released: September 30, 2012
RT Score: 7%
Why critics hate it: "This crackpot thriller from the usually competent Jim Sheridan leaves only one mystery unsolved: what on earth was he thinking?"
Positive Review: "What appears to be an enigma at first is resolved with great skill. A thinking person's movie..."

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Released: February 17, 2012
RT Score: 18%
Why critics hate it: "It has a dud plot that attempts to reboot the story of the character. Cage revels in his own insanity and you have to wonder if the guy gives a crap."
Positive Review: "One of the most visually interesting movies I've ever seen. Loved it. 10/10.  The action never stops...There is also a story being told and all the action fits into that story."

Gone
Released: February 24, 2012
RT Score: 11%
Why critics hate it: "The ending, which will not be discussed here, is jaw-droppingly stupid. "Gone" is a slow-moving thriller that doesn't make sense."
Positive Review: "Better than I thought it was going to be. A lot of clearheaded thinking went into the script of this movie. All the bits of dialogue have their way of meshing together in a tightly knit story that is both surprising and full of suspense. There isn't a wasted word in this film and not one that is out of place."

Jack and Jill
Released: November 11, 2011
RT Score: 3%
Why critics hate it: "It's cruel and creepy, not funny."
Positive Review: "'Jack and Jill' has a perfect amount of hilarity and composure of characters..They have the greatest balance of love and affection with a side of crazy antics that make you want to laugh your way home in the middle of the film. Of course, you wouldn't want to leave, for this is a brilliant masterpiece."

One for the Money
Released: January 27, 2012
RT Score: 2%
Why critics hate it: "Director Julie Anne Robinson never finds a convincing tone and ruins everything with over-emphatic comedy reaction shots and a music track that keeps telling us how funny everything is (it isn't)."
Positive Review: "Just saw it this morning, and I was wonderfully surprised by how excellent this movie version is!!! I thought the characters were all well-cast, that the plot followed along at a good pace, and was true to the funny quirky spirit of the book.."

Reuniting the Rubins
Released: March 16, 2012
RT Score: 0%
Why critics hate it: "There are some films so bad, they don't warrant a review. This is one of them."
Positive Review: "A genuinely heart-warming film with lots of funny moments and a touching storyline.  Overall this was a great first attempt by an aspiring new director and well worth a viewing if you understand the dynamics and you are from a large family."

A Thousand Words
Released: March 9, 2012
RT Score: 0%
Why critics hate it: "Murphy, without the words to go along with his bug-eyed double-takes and the mugging, is lost here...He's never been a silent comic, and never will be."
Positive Review: "Eddie Murphy finally ended up in a good movie for once. It was more of what he used to do, such as Coming to America. His performance was great. Being able to act a part out without words or noises, but still show expressions and have people care or laugh is pure talent."

Review: Wind River (2017)

Elisabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner Director/Screenwriter: Taylor Sheridan Starring: Jeremy Renner, Elisabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, Graham Greene, Kelsey Asbille MPAA Rating: Rated R for strong violence, a rape, disturbing images, and language Genres: Drama, Mystery & Suspense Theatrical Release Date: August 4, 2017 On DVD/Streaming: November 14, 2017 Rotten Tomatoes Score : 87%   Clip: "She Ran Further" Wind River is not an easy watch, to say the least.  But it's almost essential viewing; it shows us [the audience] a part of the country with which we may have previously been unfamiliar.  I, for one, knew little to nothing about Native American life in Wyoming.  The brisk, brutal, snowy landscape easily matches the tone of the story and the mystery at its center.  From the opening sequence, which shows a distraught young woman running barefoot on the cold snow, we have an idea as to where the story will take us.  And, for the m...

Review: Tomb Raider

Daniel Wu and Alicia Vikander Director: Roar Uthaug Screenwriters: Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Alastair Siddons Starring: Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and some language Genres: Action, Adventure Theatrical Release Date: March 16, 2018 Rotten Tomatoes Score : 50%   Clip: "Waterfall" Tomb Raider  is much better than it has any reason to be.  Not that it needed to be bad, but with the plethora of remakes and reboots as of late, it is easy to have low expectations for the majority of them.  Director Roar Uthaug's Tomb Raider is definitely more of a reboot than a remake, as it is a far cry from the poorly-made Angelina Jolie-starring Lara Croft movies (of which there are two).  Jolie's Croft was certainly slick, but the focus seemed to be more on her sex appeal than anything else.  Tom Raider , however,  Is more about Croft’s br...

Review: Love, Simon

Nick Robinson and Katherine Langford Director: Greg Berlanti Screenwriters: Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker (based on the novel by Becky Albertalli) Starring: Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual references, language, and teen partying Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance Theatrical Release Date: March 16, 2018 Rotten Tomatoes Score : 92%   Clip: "Why Is Straight the Default?" Love, Simon  is a coming-of-age rom-com tailor-made for 21st-century teenagers.  And it just so happens that it's the first one that features a gay lead.  Based on the best-selling YA adult by Becky Albertalli, Simon directed by Greg Berlanti, who spearheads CW shows such as Arrow and The Flash , and written by This Is Us  scribes Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker. Berlanti, Berger, and Aptaker bring numerous pop culture and political references, which certainly helps to a...
