2017 Oscar Nominee Predictions

Yes, I'm back!  I never really went anywhere, but I clearly haven't written any entries in nearly a year.  Oh well.  I decided to change the name of the blog to "Let's Get Critical," and you're welcome for now getting Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical" stuck in your head (as it is in mine).  Apparently, though, www.letsgetcritical.blogspot.com was taken, so I'll stick with my current web address until such point as I am able to -- or feel like -- getting a domain (gasp!).   Well, anyway, here are my 2017 Oscar nominee predictions, based on what/who have already won and been nominated for various other awards.  The nominees will be ranked in order of likelihood to receive a nomination and/or win, and this will not count tonight's Golden Globe winners.  Oscar nominees are announced Tuesday, January 24th and Jimmy Kimmel will host the ceremony, which airs Sunday, February 26th, on ABC.  If I have the time, I'll post individu...

Golden Globes Snubs And...Guess Who's Back?

Yes, folks, I'm back -- but I won't be posting reviews from screenings.  Long story short, I didn't have time to go to screenings, and now I'm moving from Boston to Stonington, CT.  But that doesn't mean I'll stop going to the movies!   Anyway, the Golden Globe nominees were announced yesterday morning, and there were many expected nominees with a few surprises throw in there.  Of course, there are a number of people who I think deserved to be nominated this year, and I'm clumping all snubbees [a word I just invented] into one category.   -Jennifer Aniston -- Horrible Bosses   [Best Actress, Comedy] -Steve Carell -- Crazy, Stupid, Love  [Best Actor, Comedy] -Jesper Christensen -- The Debt  [Best Supporting Actor] -Marion Cotillard -- Midnight in Paris  [Best Supporting Actress] -Armie Hammer -- J. Edgar  [Best Supporting Actor] -John Hawkes -- Martha Marcy May Marlene  [Best Supporting Actor] - Bryce Dallas Howard -- ...

Movie Review: The Help

Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer Director: Tate Taylor Writer(s): Tate Taylor (screenplay), Kathryn Stockett (novel) Stars: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Janney Rated: PG-13   Genres: Drama, Comedy Release Date: August 10, 2011  Tagline: Change begins with a whisper  Rotten Tomatoes Score: 72%   "The Help", based on the novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett, is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, and not merely by fans of the novel. Moviegoers have been wondering how Tate Taylor, a virtually unknown director, would handle adapting such an adored - and controversial - book. It turns out, he delivers a humorous and heart-rending film.  The film takes place in the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone, never better), an ambitious and intelligent young college graduate, embarks on an unusual assignment: to write a book from the point of view of "the he...

Crazy, Stupid, Love: An unconventional, albeit unevenly paced, romantic comedy

Crazy, Stupid, Love does not dawdle in introducing its primary conflict: Emily (Julianne Moore) announces that she wants to divorce Cal (Steve Carell, away from his natural Office habitat) while the couple of 25 years is having an unromantic date, but she soon confides that she has been with another man (Kevin Bacon). Cal is far too stunned to react properly, and impulsively jumps out of a moving car.  He enters a local bar that he has passed numerous times, and he notices Jacob (Ryan Gosling, whose abs are indeed real), an overt flirt and expert ladies’ man who fawns over the Hannah (Emma Stone, lovely and charming), although Hannah is about to graduate from law school and is not intimidated or tempted by Jacob’s come-ons. Meanwhile, Cal and Emily’s son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo, embodying a hopelessly-in-love adolescent convincingly), is certain that his babysitter (former America’s Next Top Model contestant Analeigh Tipton) is his soul mate, and in a creatively romantic ...
